Use This Piece As Your Personal Gardening Guide

Gardening isn’t just a means to adorn your landscaping. There are many benefits that gardening can provide you, besides the satisfaction of seeing your garden looking its best. It is an activity which offers the gardener opportunities for achieving serenity and gaining a greater appreciation of life. Especially if you are good at it, its effects are profound.

Sod should be laid properly. Your soil should be prepared before you lay the sod. Pull out any weeds and break up the soil. Flatten your soil and make it slightly compact. The soil should be adequately moistened. Be sure to stagger the rows of sod. The joints should be offset like bricks in a wall. Firm the sod down to form a flat, even surface, and fill in any gaps between the sod with a little soil. Keep the sod moist and avoid walking on it until it is well-rooted, usually two to three weeks.

TIP! Sod should be laid properly. Before the sod can be laid, you should prepare the soil.

Turn your tool handles into convenient rulers. You can use shovels or rakes as measuring sticks. Lay the handles upon the floor and use a tape measure along side of them. Paying close attention to the measurements, use a black marker to establish each interval along the handle’s side in a clearly visible manner. You will never find yourself looking for a ruler thanks to this simple tip.

Try to plan a variety of perennials that are slug-proof. Snails and slugs are garden nightmares, and only need a single evening to obliterate a plant. They gravitate towards perennials with smooth thin leaves, particularly on younger plants. Some varieties of perennials are not preferred by snails and slugs, particularly perennials that have hairy, tough leaves or a taste that isn’t appetizing. Consider planting these varieties of perennials to discourage slugs and snails from eating your flowers. Euphorbia and achillea are examples of slug-proof perennials.

Keep your plants thriving through the winter by bringing them inside. It’s a good idea to save any expensive plants or those that will thrive in indoor heat. When you dig up the plant, carefully avoid the roots then place it in a container.

TIP! If you see mildew that is powdery, stay away from expensive chemicals to treat it. Mix some baking soda and a very small amount of liquid soap into water.

For flowers throughout the spring and the summer, be sure to plant some bulbs. Bulbs are hardy, easy to grow into flowers, and will blossom for several years. Different types of bulbs bloom at different times, so if you choose appropriately, you can have blooms from early spring to late summer.

If you find that you have soil that has high amounts of alkaline, mix used coffee grounds throughout the soil. This is a great and cheap way to increase the acid levels in your dirt. The right soil will make your vegetables taste better and make your flowers more vibrant and aromatic.

You may want to think about having evergreens that will produce berries planted in your yard. These will help give your garden a burst of color, even in the winter months when most other vegetation has lost their colors. These plants come in several different varieties, including the Winterberry, American Holly, Cranberrybush, and Common Snowberry.

TIP! In a dark area, pre-soak your seeds overnight. Soak the seeds by placing them in a container where they are covered with water.

Good tools for the gardener include a wheelbarrow and a kneeling stool. It is important to protect your knees when you are kneeling in the garden, and a foam kneeling pad will help with that. Using a wheelbarrow or wagon to transport heavy loads of dirt will help protect you from back injuries so make sure that you have one.
